Common termite species: -

Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes curvinagthus/gestroi

Adult worker and soldier size ranging from 3 to 10mm. Soldier have large mandible, yellowish head and creamy body color whereas worker is creamy in color. Soldier will release white liquid when being torture, swarming during the day. Door/window frame, skirting, cabinet, cupboards, books, carton box in store room are among the hotspots for termite infestation. 

 

Sign of infestation

  1. Mud tubes/trails
  2. Hollow wood
  3. Dead or alive termite

Drywood Termite

Adult size about 6-10mm. They exhibit characteristics such as thicker waist, short legs, and straight antennae. They prefer to infest soft wood rather than hard wood (teak), dry fecal pellet is found near the kick holes in the infested wood. Their alates swarm during dusk or night. Drywood termite usually habits wooden furniture which is not treated with insecticide.

Sign of infestation

  1. Fecal pellet
  2. Dull and hollow wood sound

Approaches to control them

  1. Wood injection — Injecting insecticide into the infested wood using foam formulation

Dampwood Termite/Garden Termite, Neotermes sp.

Adult size about 8-16mm. The soldier have longer head with strong and stout mandibles. Dampwood termite do not make tunnel/mud tube/trails. They feed on decaying woods, old tree stumps, rotting log and buried timber. Normally they nest in garden area, tree shrubs, or wood that in contact directly with soil with high moisture content.
